Why Is River Falls Called River Falls?
The origins of River Falls’ name are intertwined with a series of historical events. In 1856, George Pratt formally documented a land plan for the region located just to the south of the Village of Kinnickinnic, naming it Greenwood Falls. However, two years later in 1858, the establishment of a post office brought about a shift in nomenclature, and the area became known as River Falls. This transition led to a period of confusion as all three names—Greenwood Falls, River Falls, and the Village of Kinnickinnic—coexisted and were used interchangeably. Notably, the post office bearing the name River Falls was situated within the Village of Kinnickinnic, contributing to the intricacies of the situation.
What Was River Falls Originally Named?
The village now known as River Falls had its beginnings when Charles Hutchinson became the first postmaster and established the first post office in the area. At that time, the village was originally named Kinnickinnick. However, complications arose as mail destined for the Kinnickinnick post office began arriving at a Greenwood post office in Clark County instead. To resolve this confusion, it was deemed necessary to change the village’s name. Subsequently, in order to avoid any further mix-ups with mail delivery, the village officially changed its name to River Falls.
